Conceived originally as a serious presentation of the development of philosophy for Catholic seminary students, Frederick Copleston's nine-volume A History Of Philosophy has journeyed far beyond the modest purpose of its author to universal acclaim as the best history of philosophy in English.
Copleston, an Oxford Jesuit of immense erudition who once tangled with A. Ayer in /5(65). The full title of this book is ‘Reading Plotinus: a practical introduction to Neo-Platonism’, which I did feel was a slight misnomer for two reasons: the first is that Neo-Platonism as designating a philosophy is open to interpretation, being identified with such concepts and practices as theurgy and divinization, with Proclus and Iamblichus being seen as Cited by: This is an extraordinarily valuable book (or books as it comes in two volumes).
